Witched & Whored (2022)

Essay and Poetry chapbook, commissioned for The Museum of Sex Objects Summer 2022 exhibition at The Horse Hospital, funded by Arts Council England.

“'Witched & Whored' stood out to me immediately with its gorgeous graphic design and the strikingly fluid layout of its principal text - a poem titled 'Out She Spills,' accompanying an art installation of the same name. Reading through the poem feels like a dramatic act, transforming the reader's single internal voice into a magnificently macabre ensemble, twisting and turning and flowing like blood and blackened water through the dark, enraging histories of witchcraft, sex work, womanhood and queer sexuality in England. Inspired specifically by histories of witch trials and serial killings of sex workers in the estuarial corner of East Anglia where she grew up, Carless-Frost has woven a beguilingly intriguing narrative between her introductory essay on the witch and whore in relation to English socio-politics and capitalism, and her ritualistic animation of their enshrouded histories - raising the victims of patriarchal histories from the ooze of the Essex marshes.” -- The Fifty-Foot Press
